The Castle Experience
Barcaldine Castle is one of the few ancient castles on the Scottish mainland operating as a bed and breakfast. Guests receive a guided tour of the castle covering its 400-year history, local folklore, and secret passageways. The Great Hall and Laird's Parlour offer grand open fireplaces where guests gather for evening drinks from the bar service.
Accommodations
The six individually styled rooms feature antique decor, including four-poster beds and historic furniture such as a bed once owned by Andrew Carnegie. Several rooms contain hidden staircases or turrets, with the Barcaldine Room offering a secret passage down to the Great Hall. Each en-suite room provides a clawfoot tub, walk-in shower, bathrobes, and views over Loch Creran or the gardens.
Dining
A full Scottish breakfast is served daily in the Great Hall, cooked to order with local ingredients including fresh croissants, fruit, and hot dishes like eggs benedict. Complimentary afternoon tea and welcome snacks are provided upon arrival. Special diet menus are available, and guests can order wine or champagne from the bar.
Location & Grounds
The castle sits on private grounds with breathtaking views over Loch Creran and the Glencoe mountains. Guests can walk directly from the castle to the lochside and explore the beautifully maintained gardens with picnic areas and a sun terrace. Free on-site private parking and an electric vehicle charging station are available, with Oban just a 15-minute drive away and Glen Coe 30 minutes.
Events & Pet-Friendly Policy
The castle can be hired for exclusive use for weddings, family reunions, or other events, providing complete privacy for up to 35 guests. Dogs are welcome, with pet-friendly rooms and grounds that allow walks along the loch. Professional staff including hosts Patrick and Cecilia assist with event planning and ensure all details are handled.
